Those who know, row!
Dublin native Niall O’Toole is founder and director of Ireland’s first dedicated indoor rowing studio, Crew Class.
Members of this boutique fitness experience are in good hands with Niall holding the title of Ireland’s first ever rowing World Champion. The former world record holder is also a three time Olympian. A multi medallist, his pioneering rowing career spanned over two decades and included fifteen world championships.
On the rise
Crew Class has spread to three locations in Dublin and also offers corporate and team training days. Niall uses indoor rowing on the Concept 2 RowErg to deliver a low-impact, total-body training session for all ages and fitness levels. You will find identical Concept 2 machines in the Hali Wellness Suite and can begin your training just downstairs by visiting Niall’s YouTube channel.
Through educational videos Niall explains how the benefits of rowing are unparalleled as it targets 87% of muscles with every stroke. ‘Rowing demands a combination of endurance, strength, speed and power, ultimately delivering the complete total-body training session.’
The next big thing
Indoor rowing is considered ‘the next big thing’ in the fitness industry with dedicated indoor rowing studios gaining a massive following throughout the world. In Ireland, the growing popularity is helped by the success of the Rowing Ireland’s High Performance Team athletes like Sanita Puspure, Gary and Paul O’Donovan and Fintan McCarthy, as well as other professional athletes who have adopted indoor rowing as part of their training.

Having trained on indoor rowing machines throughout his athletic career, Niall saw the potential to create a dedicated rowing studio. Crew Class started with one studio in Ringsend, but quickly expanded to include facilities in Dun Laoghaire and the Guinness Enterprise Centre. The Dun Laoghaire studio is of particular interest to Hali residents offering the best proximity and possibly the most picturesque setting for a fitness class in Dublin. Niall regularly sets up his machines on the pier and the early birds can practice their rhythm and power while watching the sun rise over the Royal St. George’s Yacht Club marina.
Each class is driven by a sense of purpose and fosters camaraderie, community and most importantly, fun!
When starting Crew Class, Niall was determined to be authentic to the sport he loves. As such, every Crew Class programme is underpinned by that genuine connection with the sport of rowing. Niall designs programmes that unite people of all shapes, sizes, strengths, and abilities within a synchronised group fitness experience. Each class is driven by a sense of purpose and works as a Crew in a team-oriented environment that fosters camaraderie, community and most importantly, fun!
